cremation process
Cremation begins with the preparation of the body of the deceased. Any dangerous implants (for example, pacemakers) are removed. Jewelry is also returned to the family. Clothing and other non-hazardous materials (for example, metal fillings) remain on the body.
After preparation, the cremation vessel (containing the body of the deceased) is placed in the retort and subjected to extreme heat (760 to 980 C/1400 to 1800 F). In the process, organic substances are reduced to bone fragments and non-combustible materials (eg, artificial joints).
After a cooling period, the metals are removed and recycled. The bone fragments are crushed into a coarse gray or brown powder known as cremated remains or ashes. The cremated remains are placed in an urn or container and returned to the family (as explained below).
